Originally from south Florida, Charelle grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina attending Wake County Public schools kindergarten through 9th grade. Charelle experienced attending a private school and studying abroad in Queensland, Australia her sophomore and junior years of high school before completing her K-12 education at Raleigh Charter High School as part of the school's first graduating class.
After high school graduation, Charelle deferred attending a university right away and instead worked at as Instructional Assistant at a local elementary school for two years. While in that setting, she realized teaching and meeting the needs of her students was her passion, and set off to East Carolina University in Greenville, NC to complete her bachelors degree in middle grades education. Charelle returned to the Raleigh area to teach 6th-grade advanced, core, and intervention math classes at East Millbrook Magnet, a local arts magnet middle school. She served on the school improvement team as the math representative, coached the track team, and became a district demonstration classroom for model VMath implementation (a district-wide intervention program). After two years, she transferred to Heritage Year Round Middle School in Wake Forest, a suburb north of Raleigh, teaching 7th-grade advanced and core math and 7th-grade social studies. Upon completing her Masters of Arts in instructional technology at East Carolina, Charelle decided to leave the classroom and serve Heritage in another role. She worked as an instructional facilitator assisting teachers with strong core instruction and their response when students do and do not understand the content. In this position, Charelle created and presented professional development, attended professional learning team meetings, and served on the school's intervention, school improvement, media technology teams, and co-chaired the equity leadership team. Charelle's other roles included serving as the testing coordinator, co-advising National Junior Honor Society, and designing and developing the school's BYOD implementation plan. Last school year, she partnered with an 8th-grade language arts teacher to begin a book club for systematically marginalized students. She has also partnered with the school district's Office of Equity Affairs to serve on the planning and implementation team for the district-sponsored annual young women's conference. Most recently, Charelle partnered with Teachers Pay Teachers as an applicant external reviewer for their new Teach for Justice Grant. Charelle is excited to continue her school leadership journey through NCSU's master and doctoral programs. |
