PROBLEM OF PRACTICE
Implemented InterventionFuller GT/AIG Elementary School experiences predictable student achievement gaps between racial subgroups, students identified as AIG or having learning disabilities; as well as disparities with students who receive discipline referrals.
In response to addressing the persistent gaps, I helped reintroduce the school's Equity/Diversity Team. The team will spend the year participating in 1-hour monthly professional development sessions during team meetings to build the team's capacity to disrupt inequities at the school level. The team will also define vision and goals for the year and beyond. |
There's a gap between our intention for quality education for every child, the actions we take, and the conditions we provide that prevents students from succeeding to their full potential. |
Intended Outcomes
The purpose of the Problem of Practice is to collaboratively create the intended equitable school environment described in the school’s vision statement. The formation of the team and the team’s learning throughout the school 2020-21 school year will provide a space for group members to think critically and creatively about the student population, the existing student achievement gaps, and responses to that meet individual needs that may lead to changes to current systems and structures. The team, or the school's first adopters, will then have the capacity to lead others in this work, which will increase teacher-student relationships and, ultimately, student achievement.
Evaluation QuestionsWhat are team members’ beliefs and perceptions of racially diverse students?
Does deficit thinking occur when determining why gaps exist among subgroups? Did the Equity/Diversity Team sessions have a positive effect on team members’ common beliefs about students, specifically students of color? |
